The Late Rory O'Conor

On Friday, March 26, the sudden death took place of Rory O'Conor Bawnmore House, Kanturk, Co. Cork.
Rory was the only son of Bryan and Mary O'Conor and dear brother of Clody. Aged 20 years, his untimely death was heart-breaking for his family and wide circle of friends.
From a well known farming and sporting family, Rory attended national school at Lismire, where he was a member of the title-winning school hurling team. He continued his education at Coláiste Theresa, Kanturk and third level at Darragh Agricultural College, Clonakilty.
His love of sports was evident from an early age. His father and uncles formed an integral part of the highly successful Lismire hurling team of the 1980s. Rory was part of the Kanturk schools team which won the All-Ireland in 2008 and won a County under 21 with Duhallow in 2009.
He idolised his uncle John and was intent on playing on the same Lismire team. Initially he acted as John's caddy at Lismire games, but fulfulled his ambition in 2006 when he played on the same Lismire team.
He regularly went to training in John's coveted Cork jersey. Sadly, it will now rest in his arms forever.
His dazzling performances and unerring accuracy, helped propel Lismire to many success in recent years, especially in 2008, when they won the divisional final and reached the county semi-final.
Rory enjoyed a close and fun-loving relationship with his sister Clody and it gave him great pleasure to assist her with the preparation and transport of her horses to various equestrian events.
He loved family, gatherings and he was the catalyst to ensure everyone, from the eldest to the youngest, fully enjoyed themselves. Rory adored his grandparents and held a very special place in their hearts. He was always dependable whenever he was needed.
As Rory had a very close bond with home everyone was delighted and particularly his father Bryan when he returned from college to work on the farm in early 2009. From the age of five he never missed a national ploughing championship and enjoyed attending other events such as the Royal Show in the UK and World Rally Championship.
The huge crowds that attended his removal from his family home and his funeral mass bore testament to the high regard in which he and his family were held. His remains were shouldered by his teammates, from Lismire and Duhallow, from St. Joseph's Church, Lismire, to Kilcorcoran cemetery where he was laid to rest in the family plot.
