The Late Jeremiah Hayes
The recent passing of Jeremiah Hayes of Burgatia, at a comparatively early age, cast a deep pall of gloom over the entire Rosscarbery community.
Jerh, who was the youngest of a family of thirteen, was born July 1954 to Jimmy and Mary at Burgatia. Having attended the Convent primary school, he then went to the Ardagh boys school. It was here he developed an interest in football, which he maintained all through his life. He played for Carbery Rangers in all grades up to Junior, and was an outstanding midfielder on the St Fachtna's minor team that won the West Cork championship in 1972. After this he spent a sojourn in London, and on his return, he took over the running of he home farm.
The main enterprise on the farm was dairy, but Jerh's father, the late Jimmy Hayes, also grew early potatoes for the market. Jerh expanded this further and also grew vegetables and his stand on the main road, halfway between the Warren Cross and the Lios Corner, became a familiar landmark.
In addition to his work on the farm, Jerh also found time to help the community. He was a member of the first directly elected Community Council in Roscarbery, and wheather it was the making of the pitch and putt courses at the Warren, or preparing for he Tidy Towns competition, or helping with the local carnival, Jeremiah, with his tractor and trailer, was always available to help.
He maintained a life-long interest in the Carbery Rangers Club and was justifiably proud of the contribution made by his sons Seamus and John, not alone to the Carbery Rangers but also to the Carbery and Cork teams in recent years.
A man of jovial disposition, he could be relied upon to enlighten any occasion with a song. A devoted husband and father, a good neighbour , his passing will be felt in many quarters, but most of all by his wife and family. To Margaret,Gillian, Seamus, John and Donna to his brothers John Joe, Steve, Noel, Paddy, Mike and sisters Mary Jo, Ellen, Siobhan, Chrissie and Judy, his many nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends, sincerest sympathy was extended.
May he rest in peace. Ar Dheis lamh de go raibh se
