Cork hurling boss John Meyler is calling for the installation of 4G artificial pitches countrywide.

His comments come after the new Páirc Uí Chaoimh pitch cut up badly during a recent Allianz League double-header and is set to be replaced later in the year.

“Watching club matches [on Saturday], I think there’s a case for 4G pitches to be built everywhere, as distinct from grass pitches. That’s a huge strategic decision to be made by the GAA but looking at the two matches in Thurles and Parnell Park, there’s a lot to be said for 4G pitches," Meyler is quoted as saying in the Irish Examiner.

“You see Musgrave Park is now an all-weather pitch, you see the 4G pitch in Páirc Uí Chaoimh... I was down at a Cork and Kilkenny U17 challenge match [on Páirc Uí Chaoimh’s 4G back-pitch on Saturday morning]. The match was played at a high intensity, high speed.

“I think that’s probably the way to go, but it would be a huge strategic decision to be made for Croke Park. But once it goes down, it’s there and there’s no complaints then about the pitches," added the Wexford native, who was speaking at CBC’s ‘The Road to Success’ event on Saturday.
