Cork county board chairman Ger Lane has rubbished rumours that Kieran Kingston stepped down as hurling manager over having to pay for All-Ireland final tickets.

Kingston's resignation in September came as a shock after he led the Rebels to an unexpected Munster SHC success a couple of months earlier. He has since been replaced by John Meyler, but rumours have continued to circulate about the reasons behind Kingston's surprise departure. 

"We were obviously very disappointed that Kieran chose to step down, and that some of his selectors went with him. His decision was based purely on personal and work reasons," Lane told The Irish Examiner.

"I am aware of that rumour but it is utter nonsense. I met with Kieran on a couple of occasions and discussed these rumours.

"Kieran bought tickets for the All-Ireland hurling final in the same way as any of our inter-county managers or members of the executive purchase tickets. I suspect the person he was providing them for might have been more put out at having to pay for them more than Kieran," added Lane, whose term as chairman will end at next Sunday's county convention.
