Connell, Senan

The late Senan Connell The death took place, suddenly, of former Cooraclare and Clare footballer Senan Connell who was buried in Dublin on New Year's Day, 2007. Senan took ill while out walking. A member of the Cooraclare team in the fifties and sixties, he won a Clare senior championship with the West Clare club in 1956 and was a member of their team beaten by Miltown in the County final with his native parish. He played minor and senior football for Clare, mainly as a corner back. As a Garda he was based in Dublin and served for many years in the Carriage Office. He played with the Garda club for many years but at that time St Vincents were the dominant force in Dulbin football. The former Clare footballer would have played on Garda teams with the late Paddy Harrington (Cork) and Tom Langan (Mayo). His son, Senan Junior, has been a member of the Dublin senior panel for the past decade and he won a number of Dublin championships with Na Fianna. His daughter Maura was a member of the Dublin camogie team in the eighties and helped them to a number of National titles. He always maintained a keen interest in the progress of Clare GAA teams and was particularly happy with the successes of both Clare footballers and hurlers in the nineties.
