The late Dermot Hogan Former Kilfenora, Clare and Munster footballer Dermot Hogan passed away at Cahercalla Community Hospital. Dermot, who was 81, won two senior championship medals with Kilfenora in 1941 and 1951. In 1941 Kilfenora defeated Kilkee in the county final, while a decade later they beat Clohanes. Dermot also played for Clare for 12 years and lined out for his county in Croke Park against Derry in the late 1940's. Following his retirement from the playing side Dermot served his local club for many years. In fact, he was a Kilfenora selector for 20 years during which time the club contested eight intermediate finals, winning just one. For much of his working life Dermot operated Hogan's grocery shop in Kilfenora with his late wife Maureen. Dermot's most memorable football match was in the Kilfenora colours against Miltown in the 1951 county semi-final. "PJ Lynch scored 2-5 for us that day," Dermot recalled in an interveiw with The Clare Champion in the summer of 2005. "We were two points behind with a couple of minutes to go when we got a penalty. I kicked the penalty to win the match by a single point. It was my golden goal - my big moment. We went on to win the county final against Clohanes" he added.
