The late Miceal O Frighil
Miceal O Frighil, who died, was a member of a well established business family in Miltown Malbay. He was a man of many talents and a very much respected member of the community. He was by profession a primary school teacher and held appointments in a number of schools, and was headmaster for a long number of years in Dunsallagh NS in Miltown, before finishing his career, where he started as a pupil in the local Miltown NS, Miceal was a noted footballer in his youth, playing for St Patrick's Drumcondra, when a student there, and subsequently at all levels for his native St Joseph's.
He was also chairman of the club for a number of years and on one occasion contested the vice-chairmanship of the Clare county board.
Very much involved in dramatics, he took many parts for the local dramatic society, and produced and directed also on many occasions.
The FCA was a life long occupation for him and he served in many appointments of the 22 BN, FCA, Clare. He was Adjutant of the unit for a number of years, and finally became O/C B Coy, Lahinch Area with, the rank of Comdt, succeeding his close friend Barney O'Higgins, also a teacher. He was also O/C of many Guards of Honour for 22 BN.
During his varied military career, he competed in many shooting competitions in Kilworth Range and also in the All Army shoots at the Cuttagh Camp. Being equally proficient with the 303 Rifle and Gustaf 9MM, he also trained many of the teams over many years with success. During the good old days of card playing he was a regular attender at Griffey's in the Flag Road during the long winter nights, and was an equally shrewd player at both solo and 45. He loved Irish music and was a personal friend of the great Willie Clanc, and liked nothing better than a session in his brother Thomas' pub in the Square, over a few good pints.
There can be no doubt but that he lived a fulfiled and long life and we extend our sympathies to his family, all of whom are still alive and well, and will undoubtedly miss him.
