Hynes, John

The Late John Hynes The untimely death of John Hynes Feagreen, Lahinch was a shock to his family and friends and to all in the local community. A well known and respected man in the Ennistymon-Lahinch area, his passing has left a void in the community especially in GAA circles. John's main passion was the GAA and his knowledge of gaelic games issues, local and national, was second to none. The game of hurling was special to John who, 26 years ago co-founded the Ennistymon hurling club. Getting players, young and old, to play hurling, as well as recruiting new members was John's primary objective. Over the years, he held many position with Ennistymon hurling club. These included chairman, vice chairman, PRO, and delegate to the county board, Bord na n-Óg and the West Clare board. Last year, he held the position of joint treasurer of the club. He also coached many teams within the club from underage to adult level in both hurling and camogie and many of these teams captured county honours. While John enjoyed seeing these teams win, it was competing and taking part that was of most importance to him. In his opinion, it was learning to play the game that needed to be promoted and developed, not the winning, which would could in its own time. John participated in a wide range of club activities. He was always to the forefront in the club's development and could always be relied upon to organise and support club activities. His dedication to the club was always evident in his actions as he strived to promote hurling and camogie in Ennistymon. He also helped to promote hurling in the West Clare hurling board area. As well as being a promoter of hurling locally, John was a great supporter of Clare teams in both codes. In good times and bad, he was there supporting the saffron and blue and when successes arrived, they brought great joy to John. The Ennistymon hurling club members will never forget his dedication to the club, he helped found. His advice, leadership and enthusiasm for the club has left a solid foundation on which they can build for the future. Sadly, a vacuum has been left in the club that can never be filled. We have lost not only a great clubman but a great and wonderful friend. We extend our deepest sympathy to John's family and friends. Ennistymon Hurling Club Courtesy of the Clare Champion April 2003
