Tragedy struck the close knit community of Broadford this week after Tony Marsh of Main Street died having received a kick from a horse at his yard last Saturday morning.
Tony (70) was involved in a great many circles of life in East Clare including hunting, GAA, farming and served local communities as a postman of over 40 years. He also had a gra for set dancing.
He was involved with Broadford GAA all his life, playing at all levels for the club and he was the only Broadford player to play at minor, u21, intermediate and senior level for Clare.
Tony's hurling career continued when he went on to serve as a selector and to train various club teams. In 1981, he was a trainer, selector and player with the Broadford intermediate team that beat Scariff in a replay in the final of the championship. He remained involved as a member of the Broadford senior selection committee up to three years ago.
In addition to his dedication to the GAA field he was equally dedicated to his other sporting hobby and was a founding master of the East Clare Harriers in 1974. He was much part of the successful East Clare Harriers team at the RDS in Dublin when they won the All-Ireland Hunt Chase a number of years ago. He remained actively involved with the Harriers up to the present day and hunted with the Harriers as field master in his latter years.
He was also involved with the Annual Scariff Show each September. He was a noted Farrier all his life having learned his skill from his late father Tommy.
He is survived by his wife Celia, his daughters Celine, Genevieve, Cathriona, sons, Paul and Michael, brothers Pat (Tulla), Mikey (New York) and Tommy (Parteen), daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, relatives, friends and neighbours. He is predeceased by his son Anthony and brother, Martin.
His funeral took place on Wednesday with removal from his home to St Peters Church, Broadford and burial afterwards in the adjoining grounds.
