AN APPRECIATION:THE LATE
MARTIN MURRAY, MILTOWN

The death occurred of former Miltown St Joseph's and Clare senior footballer Martin Murray.
Martin was a member of an old and highly respected Miltown Malbay family. When his father, David, retired Martin took over management of the family farm. He was hardworking, loved the farming life and each year took great pride in planting his garden, nurturing and harvesting the crops. He was a progressive farmer and a good neighbour, always willing to help when call upon.
In his youth with his brothers, Fr Pat, Willie and David, he was deeply involved with Miltown St Joseph's GAA Club. He won juvenile and minor championships in the 1940's and together with Fr Pat followed in their father's footsteps winning senior championship medals. When Martin's sons Michael and Pat continued the family tradition, winning senior medals in 1985 and 1990, they became the third generation of the Murray family to do so, a feat seldom achieved in the parish.
Unfortunately Martin's playing career came to an abrupt end in August 1950 following a serious leg injury sustained in 1949 Cusack Cup Final but he continued to serve his beloved Miltown St Joseph's club as a selector and member of the executive. He maintained his deep interest in Gaelic games right up to the time of his death and was a regular supporter of club and county. He liked nothing better than to discuss and debate the outcome of those games with his many friends.
Martin was a life-long member of Miltown Coursing Club and each year was active in organising the club's annual meeting.
His coffin was draped with the Miltown and Clare colours. Members of Miltown St Joseph's GAA Club, together with members of the local coursing club, lined the street in a guard of honour for the removal of his remains from O'Friel's Funeral Home to the church.
For those of us fortunate to have known Martin and enjoyed his company he will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his wife, Nora, sons Michael and Pat, daughters Mary, Noreen and Bríd, Brother Willie and relatives. Go dtuga Dia solas agus aoibhneas na bhFlaitheas dó.
