The death has occurred of Tom (Murt) McMahon, aged 91 years. A native of Ennistymon, his popularity was evident by the attendance at the removal of his remains from Cullinane Funeral Home to Ennistymon church on Sunday evening.
Tom who died in Ennistymon hospital on Good Friday, was a well known publican in Church Street since the 1950s. He took over the running of the premises from his Kilfenora-born father, Murt, and mother, Elizabeth, who was from Lisdonvarna. Prior to becoming involved in the licensed trade business, he spent some years working in England and in Shannon. The pub was taken over in more recent years working in England and in Shannon. The pub was taken over in more recent years by his son Murty, a great coursing stalwart at local and national levels.
Tom Murt also took an interest in the greyhounds and trained a number in his time but he never forgot his love for football and hurling. He was always a great supporter of the Ennistymon and Kilfenora football teams and since his army days based in Valentia Island during the war, he followed the fortunes of the Kerry team. A proud moment for him was when a number of victorious All-Ireland Offaly team arrived in his pub with the Sam Maguire cup.
Celebrating funeral mass in Ennistymon church on Monday, Fr Ned Crosby referred to the great popularlity which Tom Murt enjoyed. He also spoke of his fine qualities and described him as a very religious man.
Following mass on Monday, the coffin was shouldered through the town to the old cemetery.
Tom Murt is survived by his wife Mary; sons Murty, Joseph, Anthony and Brian; daughter, Marie; brothers Murty (kilfenora) and Paddy (London); sisters, Mary O'Loughlin, Ennistymon and Teresa Moore, Limerick; son-in-law, daughters-in-law, brother-in-law and grandchildren.
The death also occurred of Mary Dore, Newcastlewest, sister to greyhound enthusiast, Paddy Clarke, Ennistymon.
