Tyrone v Cavan - Ulster Semi-Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Well, it looks like the match has (finally) been set for Clones at 2pm on the 19th. Should be a huge crowd if the weather is any way decent as both counties travel well and both teams are going well.

How do people think this one will go?
What changes will either team make?

Terry will have a big decision to make if Jason Mcloughlin is fit. Does he start him and who does he leave out. Also I would think Ciaran Brady did enough to warrant a starting place. I think Keating might be in from the start this time. i would like to see K.Clarke given a role in midfield. but as has been said the team you finish with is as important as the one you start with so T.Corr,M.Argue,
N.murray, J Brady,K.Brady,G.smith,L.Buchanan all capable of contributing from the bench. We need people to track Tiernan mcCann and peter Harte so whether these are half-backs or half-forwards or whatever , it doesn't matter (positions don't matter anymore anyway. i would think Mcveety and martin Reilly would have the engines to track them but would they have the physicality.

My team would be

Galligan
faulkner
R. Dunne
Mcloughlin
flanagan
Moynagh
C. Brady
K.clarke
GMaC
Mcveety
Mackey
M.reilly
keating
Givney
Johnston

Does People Honestly think we have the team needed to beat this Tyrone machine? I cant but see Tyrone both been huge favorites and indeed VERY QUIETLY CONFIDENT. In my opinion they will be highly dissappointed if they are knocked out of Ulster and indeed beaten by Cavan. Thoughts???

Tyrone have the physiological advantage having beaten us twice this year, but league and championship are two different animals.
Tyrone will definitely be favourites for this one but hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard !!!
It's a semi final. if we give it our all, hold our heads and attack we can win it.
We were too conservative in Croke Park. We need to be brave.

How can we change the full back for an Ulster Semi after him playing nearly 10 games in that position this year? Play Dunne in corner back , move Mc Loughlin out to the half back line in place of Flanagan and replace Murray with Brady. It's how we cope with Colm Cavanagh dropping back and MC Carron putting the shackles on Seanie that's the main problem. Starting Jack Brady is a must because it gives us another scoring option.

Was at the L2 final. Harte ran through the middle without a hand being laid on him for a lot of the game. When he did get tackled the man coming off the shoulder broke the tackle and scored most of the time. If Harte plays a similar role, put K Clarke on him to soften his cough.
In the same game GMcK couldn't get into the game for an age..... we seemed to be determined to play the ball up the wings and then when we carried to the 21 yard line, we couldn't do anything with it. They had two men on the edge of the square breaking out at pace and closing the man down, the same two defenders mopped up any long ball played in. To counter this, we should have danger men inside that need to be looked after but use them to keep the Tyrone defense deep and score on the run - Mackey setting up GMcK like in the Armagh game.

I think rory dunne is more suited to the fullback role and Killian would be great further out the field.

Rory Dunne hasn't the match practice to be thrown in at full back against Tyrone . If you want to cut the Tyrone supply to their full forward line then we need to strengthen the half back line in order to win primary possession , 50-50 balls and turnovers. It's called cutting off the supply. The reason Clarke was exposed against Armagh was because of poor half back tackling. The half back line needs settling and not to be chopped and changed just to facilitate Fergal Flanagan. .. McLoughlin Moynagh and Brady gives us the attacking option with the defending. It's the one line that needs to be settled. Pointless moving Clarke just to facilitate Rory Dunne who's been off the pace because of lack of match practice . For years we have changed the full back . Leave him there. He will make it his own through time.

we can speculate all we like but Terry Hyland will make the call upsetting most of us and nearly making the rest happy !
If we win he was a tactical genius but some will still nit pick.
If we lose he's an idiot and if only he had listened to the posters on this thread.
What will be will be and no amount of speculation will change that. It's all on the day.
Heat, Rain, Wind, Injuries, fitness, shooting, and luck will all determine the result.
It's down to the 15 on the field to give an honest performance and work hard. We can't ask for more from them.

I heard a quotes from Muhammad Ali
"He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life"
" The strong will always beat the weak But the brave will always beat the strong"

Lets be brave..... lets be courageous.... lets be champions

I would go with:
R Galligan
F Flanagan R Dunne J McLoughlin
P Faulkner C Moynagh Martin Reilly

K Clarke G McKiernan

D McVeety D Givney Killian Brady
E Keating M Argue S Johnston

That means dropping Corr, Mackey and Murray from the Armagh match.
Play 3 sticky markers at the back and go from there. Killian Clarke actually got a roasting at full back the last day. He's needed for Mattie Donnelly in midfield.
Move Martin Reilly to half back to get him on the ball at the start of things. The transfers from back to front need to be very fast against Tyrone so we need a ball player back there to kick early and accurate.
Killian Brady to half forward purely to pick up Peter Harte. Pull Givney out to get him in the game more and dominate half forward. Mackey slows the thing up too much for my liking.
Argue hasn't the work rate out the field, but on the square for a mix of high and low ball he could be dangerous. I'd start Keating for his aggression and ball winning ability. A huge part of playing Tyrone is that inside forwards need to tackle hard and track back every time. Have we the legs for that up front? I'd be a bit worried.

interesting views above!

how to select versus what we have seen of this Tyrone outfit
- quick direct ball in using our size when necessary
- do not carry into tackles
- stop the carrier/ runners early ..not 30m out
- press their kick outs and force them to kick longer...then contest in air and on ground
- high intensity

so in summary ...dont pick all of Martin Reilly, Mackey, etc

Id go...
Galligan
McLoughlin, Dunne, Faulkner
K brady Moynagh C brady
Clarke, Corr,
McVitty, Kiernan, Reilly
Keating Givney, Johnston

Reilly or McVitty must not be caught on the ball or hold it up too much
our half backs must do 100% better than the league final or the Armagh match ...go with the carrier dont jump in!!!!!
use Clarke athleticism outfield.... restore Dunne where Clarke looked vulnerable
J Brady...good sub but not a good enough ball winner in a tight game
Argue.... hasnt contributed enough but could make an impact
Flanagan.... Terry loves him.... but we need to move on not back

Might be a bit hasty making too many changes lads. id go with the following:

Galligan

Mc Loughlin Dunne Faulkner
Flanagan Moynagh Mc Veety
Clarke Corr
Mackey Mc Kiernan Reilly
Johnston Givney Keating

for the record id have spent the last 3-4 weeks practicing kicking long range shooting because that's what it will come down to in my opinion.

I d stick with M. Argue - he s played some some very good games for us in the league and also against Tyrone in the final - but in my opinion his best position is right -half forward where he can win kick-outs and power on up that wing and take long range scores. He played most of the Armagh game up the left wing and looked very uncomfortable - not being able to cut in on his favoured right foot.
We need the big men - thats what we were lacking this last few years. McVitty is such an outstanding footballer you could accomadate him somewhere else even midfield ! Also Im not convinced Rory Dunne is back anywhere near his best so i definitely would persist with K.Clarke at full back for now. I would also have Ciaran Brady back in from the start ( at the expense of F Flanagan ) - he has tons of ability and great going forward. I dont know what was wrong with Niall Murray in the Armagh game - he was out of sorts completely very untypicically and didnt play for the Gaels against Kingscourt. I hear J Mc Loughlin is definitely out - can anyone confirm that ?

well if mcloughlin is still injured then my team would be:

Galligan
faulkner
R. Dunne
K. Brady
flanagan
Moynagh
C. Brady
K.clarke
GMaC
Mcveety
Mackey
M.reilly
keating
Givney
Johnston.

I agree Argue looks best on the right flank, maybe as a third midfielder in place of mackey or Johnston.

David Gough is the referee . It could have been a lot worse for Cavan I suppose (i.e. Marty or the brother).

After watching yesterday I'm becoming more convinced that the Ulster champions will be coming from our side of the draw.
Donegal will likely beat Monaghan by over-powering them around the middle. They couldn't do that to Cavan, and with McGee out they are vulnerable at the back. All we need now is to nick Tyrone... sorry lads got ahead of myself there!

Yeah Gough should do a decent job.

I must say having watched all the Ulster championship games so far this year, I don't think any refereeing performance was up to scratch. Deegan yesterday was probably the best so far but he was poor along the line in our game.

Some referees just don't seem to grasp Ulster football!

I think you have been out in the sun too much.!!
Monaghan will be in the final and will be hard to beat. Don't get too far ahead of yourself there madge.
We have a huge task ahead of ourselves on Sunday. One step at a time. We can worry about the other side of the draw if we get past Tyrone at the weekend

Next Sunday is a major test for the team. They have to learn the lessons of the League final and bring something different, either tactical and or personnel wise, to the table. Can TH turn the tables on MH? it's possible but no more than that.

Best of luck boys!
