Cavan v Roscommon

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

here we go again,

I suppose it could have been worse. Probably would have preferred Clare or Kildare.
Will we have learnt from our previous meeting. We were fairly unlucky I thought there. missed a penalty and conceded a very soft goal. There was nothing in it. However lots of changes since that game. we lined out against Westmeath without our Captain Alan Clarke, our top scorer Martin Dunne, our Talisman cian Mackey and our go-to man in the forwards Eugene Keating, combine that with the absence of regulars, Feargal Flanagan,Killian Clarke and Dara Mcveety, the panel is certainly being tested. But I believe we can win this.

Don't forget Roscommon have lost Donie Shine as well and he got 6pts of their total at Croke Park.

It should be interesting game. Good to have another home game. All the talk about Cavan being defensive or whatever, they scored 18pts in the League final, not bad for a defensive team.. And created plenty more chances only for wasteful shooting.

Dont forget Rossies didn't play any u21s in that final and diarmuid murtagh will be assured to start with shine missing

Will have to step up to win this one.
Plenty of incentive with the div 3 defeat to be avenged!!!
Noticed Mackey looked a bit heavy looking last weekend.
How much has injury curtailed his training.
Will Dunne be back?

very happy with the draw theres nothing between the teams but home advantage is key for us which will win it for us i hope.if it had to be in dr.hyde park ud fancy rossies but that we have home advantage we should edge it expecting a big crowd to turn out for this one roll on the 12th of july tasty game ahead.

So Roscommon again. I don't think we have anything to fear from them. It's getting the best out of ourselves that will be the challenge. We can't continue to stop at the amber traffic light all the time, constantly passing the ball sideways and backwards. We saw from the third quarter against Westmeath that we are a different team altogether when we build a direct running momentum. This is a strength that we should be playing to and at this stage of the campaign, there is an onus on us to take responsibility for our style of football and demonstrate that we have more to offer than just a stubborn defensive system. I think that we can beat Ross if we play with confidence and run at them with pace.

Folks a winnable game nothing more nothing less. Both sides know each other very well and it's a fifty fifty game.

Don't mean to bring a dampener on things but this is a seriously tough assignment lads! On current form, its Roscommon all day. They should have beaten Mayo, arguably the second best team in the country, matched them all the way and only the kick of a ball in it at the end.

BUT! We have home advantage. And we got over the line against Westmeath which was our toughest game mentally in a long time. You'd imagine we have the bad performances out of our system at this stage? One can hope anyway. We kicked the league final away, missing a penalty, and I think there was about 5 wides in a row from us in the second half, we beat them in Breffni in the league of course too which will give us a psychological boost.

But we're going to need Mackey. We're going to need him match fit and on form, Roscommon packed their defence in Croker and we were too slow getting the ball inside which is a feature of our play all year. Mackey can unlock defences and take people on, something you don't see very often with other lads.

Donie Shine missing is a huge blow for Roscommon, that will level things up a bit with us missing Dunne.

The players will need no motivation for this one and I think if we get over the line here we'll have another long Summer!

I know that is Your Opinion and all, but do you think its possible he will be match fit for 2 weeks?

The Roscommon game will tell us exactly where we are in terms of improvement.Lets see if both players and management have learned anything from the league final defeat.Hyland keeps harping on about the 35 or so he can pick from so lets use who we need to use and lets stop moaning about whos not fit, injured or gone stateside.
As Brian Coady said "there no point in having a big panel if your not going to use them"
In terms of improvement since the bad old TC days i rate the 2 counties fairly close
Roscommon will also be missing a few including Donie Shine whos worth 5/6 points to them
A home game and a chance to wipe away the memory of a league final defeat
Lets see what we really have learned from that defeat

This looks like a very difficult assignment for us. I was very impressed with Roscommon against Mayo and they have matched our progress at both underage and senior level. We are getting to the business end of the championship and this is a time when the management need to be tactically astute. I had a feeling that we had no plan B in the games so far but perhaps thats harsh. Certainly need to cut out the service to some of this Roscommon inside forwards because the likes of Donie Smith & Kilbride will do serious damage if they are allowed.

This should be a really good game and if we are to progress I think we will need a fit Mackey & Keating and no shortage of shooting accuracy. This is winable nonetheless!

We will have to raise our game big-time.
Roscommon are a better team than us and will again probably control midfield. We have to crowd it and get the breaks to beat them.
A lot of work to be done before this game.

I think we should more than break even at midfield slasher, if we have Givney, Argue and Gearoid at 8,9 and 12 respectively, then we should gain control, 3 big men well able to field ball. It's our defence I'd be concerned with, we have looked dodgy at the back these past few games. Short kickouts are an option of course, but if Roscommon push up on us and pressure the spare man, well we saw the trouble it caused us against Westmeath, we got hemmed in and almost paid the price.

Givney Argue and Gearoid are no bigger than they were against Roscommon in the League Final or against Armagh, both times we lost midfield comprehensively.

On the loss of Shine, it's only really a loss to Roscommon from placed balls, Shine didn't deserve man of the match in the League final, in fact I'd be of the opinion that Roscommon will be more dangerous without Shine. Roscommon have a much greater wealth of talent than us in the front 6 and we will almost certainly face Murtagh and Enda Smith, both fantastic players.

From the team that faced Kerry in last year's Championship we only had 6 starting on Saturday. That's a massive turnover, the panel is stretched very thin at the moment. Mackey has been struggling with injury all year and he's not going to come good in the next 7 days.

I would also imagine that the possibility of an All Ireland Junior final might be preying on managements mind, any Junior player introduced immediately misses out.

I think this one is very even ,it will be a lot harder than the rossies think ,there high scoring comes from frees and shine can put them all over all day but i think hes out so thats a great help, they like to play defensivly too with a mass counter attack much like cavan but they run at there men stronger ,we need to beat them like we did in the first half in croke park and keep there free kicks to a minuim ,theres not going to be much in this game ,i just hope we make changes at the right time this time and not when its too late.but im happy with the draw all the same and home advantage is good too ,we beat them in the league at home.long distance scoring could be the key in this one.

Think you'll find Givney didn't start that game. Neither did Argue. Gunner and Gearoid were centrefield that day.

I hope no player is taken out of the Junior team for these dead end quallifiers... It might not mean much but the junior team are a lot closer to an all Ireland final so they should be left to try and get there.. Roscommon will be difficult to beat but home advantage might swing it our way but at the end of the day neither team will go too.far..
