Ulster U21 Championship

Any word on when we are out in the Ulster u21 Champ. How are we shaping up and are we as strong as the last 3 years. Would be a big ask to win it 3 years in a row.

Well going by the fact that they did not win the Hastings cup i would think we are not as strong as other years. I believe it is mid march some time against Monaghan, not sure if its home or away. I work with a few Monaghan men and by all accounts they think they will come close to the all Ireland, never mind ulster, they beat Tyrone in the final of their warm up competition. Tyrone won the all Ireland at this age group and Monaghan beat them convincingly. This could be just hear say though.

I would not be bothered by anything anyone from Monaghan has to say on Football, they did a lot of talking before the game two weeks ago.

It's a home game on the 20th of March.

Should they be winning the Hastings Cup every year? The Longford side that beat Cavan won the Leinster Minor Championship 3 years ago. It was only a 2point defeat. Cavan dominated most of the game. Cavan were without Connor Moynagh, Joe Dillon and Turloch Mooney against Longford.

I would think they are realistic odds. Tyrone will be very strong but we have started to get the knack of beating them over the last few years. Dont know where the Monaghan boys expect to win the All Irl when they are @ 16/1 in Ulster. A lot of people have enjoyed the last 3 years and are optimistic of the u21's. Looking forward to that joust with the Farney boys. I hope they dont crow as much as they did 2 weeks ago before the Senior!!
Will we have a full squad? Is Mooney back in full flight? Any more players to look out for?

The Monaghan game is in Breffni. The biggest danger now is that we would lose our focus, hopefully the Hastings Cup Final collapse will have shown these lads that full concentration is required at all times. U21 is notoriously unpredictable. If the reigning All Ireland Champions can be ousted in the first round for the past two years we can certainly be beaten by Monaghan. There is the material in the squad for another good run and a potential Ulster Final, but only if the application and concentration are correct.

As regards the panel, there is a lot of talk about Turloch Mooney but can a lad who has been out injured for so long really be expected to jump straight back into an Intercounty Championship game? Things will be different this year with Terry gone, if the team can adapt to this transition and stay competitive it is a great sign for our youth structure. There are a lot of good hard working lads in Seniors now and we need to be producing a few U21 lads in the same mold every year to join them.

If Mooney has made a full recovery and is 100% , why wouldn't they include him.

No reason at all, I'd be delighted to see him playing. I'm just wondering has he recovered? Has he been playing with his club again?

On a slight tangent from topic, isn't it great to see Cavan Institute qualify for the Sigerson weekend in Athlone with a game against Southern College. Great to see other Cavan players like David Givney, Martin Reilly James Farrelly and young Jack Brady in the semi final stages. Good luck to all involved. Am sure there are others in the competition too.

Mooney absolutely destroyed Drumalee for a good period of the game in Redhills on Sunday. He was every bit as good as he ever was but he did tire in the last 10 minutes or so. He would still be a key player on the county under 21s if he's on it.

I saw them in action in the Hasting's cup final. We dominated the game for 50 minutes, then 10 minutes of madness at the end cost us. I don't think this years squad is as good as previous years in terms of strength in depth, we were missing key men against Longford and it showed. Nonetheless if we can get everyone fit we'll have a good chance. Paul O'Connor and Enda Reilly will be key up front.

How many players are left from last years panel ..? Any thoughts on a starting team ...? With the successful minors of 2011 coming through we should have a strong panel and enough to get over monaghan ...
