Longford were a completely different assignment to Wexford and were very unlucky to lose. Not robbed, but almost. A draw would have been fairer to them, but how many times has that happened to us in the past?
The team saw two changes from last week. Declan McKiernan was replaced by Brendan Murray at midfield and Damien Barkey played instead of Rory Dunne at fullback.
Barkey played well, but Dunne's presence and stability were missed. McKiernan was a bigger loss with Longford's strong pair dominant throughout.
Our forwards were under much more pressure than last week and possession was very difficult to come by. Martin Dunne in particular was well marshalled, sometimes double marked. Martin Reilly's ability kept us in the game. His distribution was spot on.
The first half finished fairly even, but Longford played all their football in the third quarter and threatened to run away with it. Cavan just couldn't do anything right during this period from no 1 to no 15 and trailed by four points.
The leadership for the comeback came from Josh Hayes who pressed forward with every opportunity, even ending up getting fowled near their 14 yard line for a vital free, which was converted by Dunne. Chris Conway was also inspiritational in the last quarter, simply refusing to be beaten. His work rate in the tackle and link play were vital components of the fightback.
McClarey made a big difference when he came on and his part in our first goal scored by Dunne, was very smart. He is definitely capable of playing at a higher level. Kill's Damien Tiernan made a significant impact when introduced late on at the edge of the square. A big lad, he was unlucky with a fisted effort that could have ended up in the net.
Their no 13 got a straight red for an off-the-ball with 5 mins left and Cavan made the most of the extra man. In the dying minute, Dunne lobbed a ball into the square from wide on the left and Martin Reilly picked up the resultant break from Tiernan. Right man at the right time, and he made enough space to bury the ball in the net.
We got out of jail for sure, but Cavan worked hard for it and never accepted defeat. Longford were stunned with no time left to recover a point for the draw. Such is life.
I believe a certain Cavan man is playing a club game in Kildare on Friday which might make him eligible to play against Meath in the other semi-final on the following Wed. Wouldn't that be interesting?

Johnston wouldn't be eligble as he played in the senior championship last year, even if it was with Cavan he still wouldn't be eligble for Kildare Juniors.

FoolsGold, that was my understanding too, but I was told last night that he can actually play. Bring it on. What Cavanman wouldn't want to be playing that game?

Ondforty..... There haven't been many backs in the county that were fit to handle Seanie St club level this past 9 years... What makes you think there any there now??? Wise up will you. We have lost a top class forward who gave 8/9 great years service to the county team. All of a sudden he is public enemy number 1... Why????? Because he didn't hang around to prove himself to some jumped up wanna be manager????? He proved himself this past 9 years. Now it's time for others to prove themselves...... If they able!

Richie, You're possibly the only one left on this forum that can't see the wood for the trees and still see Johnson as the victim here. This whole situation was orchestrated well in advance of him being dropped by Val. I think you probably know that, which questions why you insist on sticking to your tired dribble of "poor Seanie" and " our best footballer in 9 years." In whose opinion was he our best footballer in any period other than the Wicklow qualifier? How many goals did he score / set up for others? How many passes did he make to better placed team mates? How many games did he turn around for us by his inspired leadership? How many games did he spend moaning to the ref instead of getting on with it? Missed? I'd say a blessing in disguise that he's gone because he is being replaced by team players who value the sacred blue jersey on their backs. And so they should. We are a proud football county with a rich tradition and we are on an upward curve, albeit with a Minor blip this summer. If you've nothing positive to contribute and still mourn his transfer, then why not follow him?

This really is scraping the barrel. What did Terry ever do to you? Are you aware that we have had our best spell at underage, u21 and minor, over the last 3 years. What did we win between '97 and this spell. In case you were in the UK, the answer is NOTHING. But sure Terry must have been responsible for this bad spell, he must have been even responsible for the low standard of club football in the county and who knows he may have even been to blame for the Gaels and Crosserlough dominating Cavan football for long spells in the '60s -70's and recently. I really think decent supporters should totally ignore your rantings and ravings. You sound like a broken record. Yes Seanie is gone, but as 99% of true GAA supporters throughout the county and country believe it was a total con job. Come up here to Dublin and hear what all the fans are saying. You might be shocked!! So it is time to support Terry and the team and with the Juniors getting to a Leinster final it proves that there are good footballers in Cavan. We have to be patient and bring the young lads along with the help of the more experienced players. Rome was never built in a day!! ---Just look at Paul Brady winning handball world titles, ---our young boxers, ---the Maguire twins from Ballyconnell, ---Virginia College --- the Fleadh ceoil So richiej stop denigrating your "own" county. Be proud of all the players who wear the jersey and support them!!!

Folks, given the issue of his transfer is now settled can we not just put the topic to bed. I wish the guy luck and have no doubt that Cavan football will survive his loss.
