Ulster Club SFC Q/F: Cavan Gaels v. Glenswilly

(Oldest Posts First)

I heard Micheal Murphy gave an exhibition at full forward in the Donegal final!! 1-7 out of 1-8!! How will the Gaels cope with Glenswilly?

The obvious way would be to double Mark murphy but that's too obvious.. Collins can take care of him on a man marking job with Meehan given a free roaming role.. The main way to stop murphy would be to cut the supply to him.. If the supply is cut he can stand on the 20 m line all day if he likes.. Yes he got 1-7 in the Donegal final but he got the kinda ball he thrives on.. If murphy has to roam looking for possession he is not as effective .. The Gaels have the balance right to beat Glenswilly.. Meehans distribution and passing and movement is first class.. Smiths speed is unreal.. Maloney-Derham is a fine attacking half back who's a handful for anyone.. Dunne is quality and works well with Meehan ... They are the 4 most improved players in the Gaels side .. I think this is their best side of the last 12 years..

Murphy will roast Collins and anyone else that Gaels try put on him, to nullify his threat... Gaels full-back line is very weak, and Glenswilly are going to target this area in particular, and even with Meehan playing as the sweeper I expect Glenswilly too have too much for them.. Donegal football is a hell of a lot stronger than Cavan football, and with Glenswilly getting a good test from Michaels in the Donegal SFC, I expect this to stand to them, and should beat the Gaels by a couple of points...

i agree...Murphy is miles better than anything in cavan and has the ability to go to town on most county full back lines, never mind a club team

As I said in a previous post if you cut the supply to murphy he can stand on the 20 m line all day.. Glenswilly have to cut the supply to 6 good Gaels forwards , each capable of winning a match.. That's the difference. I haven't seen Collins roasted on many occasions this year ...if johnstone or dunne scored 1-7 out of 1-8 people would be calling the Gaels a one man band.. That's what Glenswilly are.. Gaels have far too much power and pace for them.. If the Gaels play football, leave the niggley stuff aside they will at least get to the final... They are the best balanced Gaels team I've seen in 12 years.. Any of their forwards would get on the county team.. Any of them

Yes Murphy is a serious player for county & club. If he gets the right ball he will destroy anybody. But that there in lies the problem, getting the ball. Like richie said, i think the Gaels are a more balanced outfit than in previous years when they entered Ulster. In their last 3 championship games of the Cavan campaign they have won games by a combined total of 36 points. Never seen them winning games by that much previously. Maybe an few games throughout the championship, but not three games on the bounce. I didn't see the Donegal county final, heard Murphy was very good. But in previous rounds he was held fairly well by the Glenties & St Eunans. So it's not unthinkable that he can't be marked. An over reliance on one player will only get you so far, the better teams will overcome a one man show. Gaels to win by 5 points

Gaels backline have only conceded 1 goal in the whole championship, Collins is by far the best fullback in the county at the moment and Darren Rabbitte is the most experienced fullback in the county who has played very well as corner back for them in the whole campaign, and in his day was one of the best in Ulster.

gaels v glenswilly
i suppose we should wish the gaels well (though we will never hear the end of it, if they actually win an Ulster!)
the gaels are playing really well so they are in with a great shot
BUT
the reason they are destroying teams is that they are dominating the middle third
this makes chesty and other half backs and their forwards look very good / opposition team are not getting at their full back line (which is vulnerable to pace i suspect)
equally if the half back line / half forward line have to do more defending - things will look alot different
there are a number of gaels backs who are excellent when on top / dodgy if they have a lot of defending to do
glenswilly will make it very tough around the middle third / gaels forwards wont have as much easy ball / gaels backs will have more defending to do / as the pressure builds thats when the niggling will start - and that is what has lost it for them before

in fairness i hope they win / but it will be tight and nothing like any of their championship games to date
any thoughts?

Dunne/Meehan/smith.. Are good at switching the play from one side of the pitch to the other very quickly ... Johnstone has yet to play well even though he scored 1-3.. The midfield are breaking ball now instead of catching it and half forwards like smith and Murray and half backs like sexton and maloney -Derham are switched on to the breaking ball thus allowing the team to set up attacks quickly.. I think it's the best and most balanced Gaels team in 12 years

Johnston and the rest of the Gaels team need to stop all the niggly stuff and just play football. They were deserving of their win on Sunday but they will encounter both a better team and referee than they had on Sunday. They are a very balanced side and strong in the middle so supply to Murphy will not be guaranteed, and I think Collins will be able for him. Synical play has to go though, as Murphy will punish from placed balls.

Was very impressed with the Gaels Sunday. Murphy will be hard handled but the ball has to get into him. Castlerahan have good forwards but Gaels shape, plan and execution of it was fantastic to deny them space or ball. Think the Gaels will have a plan for Murphy. I really do feel they have a chance in Ulster and hope they do it. I feel they may not have better players than years past but have a better team. The programme was frightening Sunday, on the team list when the Gaels named players not togged out also. Probably no need to rub it in other teams face the panel they had. Some of them ex county seniors!!!!! And to the poster said about niggly stuff I feel both teams were at it Sunday and that's the way football is gone. Gaels really need that physical edge for the challenge ahead. I'm may not be sharing this sentiment with all posters but the best of luck to Cavan Gaels. They have set the bar in terms of success, commitment and underage work for the whole county to follow and I believe Castlerahan, Ramor, Ballinagh and Redhills making the move to join them. Hopefully the future bodes well for club and county football in Cavan.
