Under Fourteen Football in Cavan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Do you think that u14 football in Cavan is at a high enough standard? The county league champions are Castlerahan and they are a fantastic side but they trounced there way to the league title. Beating Crosulough in the semi final by 21 points and in the final against Castletara they were winning by 16 points until the last few minutes where Castletara got 2 Goals and they won by 10. There is a huge gap between the best and the second best.
The u14 Development squad is not satisfactory either.

We have to get back playing in Feile Div 1 before we can say we're happy with our U14 standard.

We've been division 3 in the Feile for a few years now but how do they decide what division you are in?

Division 1 teams in feile are comprised of teams from Large Urban Areas the Dublin Teams, Galway Cork etc they are Large clubs with catchment areas as big as the county of Cavan and every player on the team is 14. Our clubs cannot produce teams to compete at that level we dont have ant Large Urban Areas in the County its as simple as that.

The Under 14 competition this year did have a best team in Castlerahan but it was competative as was the under 16. coaching and the work the coaches are doing in all the clubs is commendable.

Ochonlir, that's about the most sensible post you have ever posted on here. I actually agree with what you said there. all these urban teams have a huge choice of players to choose from and invariably they are bigger and stronger than our boys as they can cherry-pick the biggest and best from over 100 players. we could not compete at that level unless we entered a divisional side.

i was at the feile in Kildarein 2009 and was talking to a lad who was over Nass u-14. They had 4 teams in the feile, and they have 1600 kid from under 8 to minor. They charge €100 membership and €2 per training session to keep the numbers down to a manageable level.

U14 football in cavan is not that bad of a standard, some very good teams and if you were to go through players from all over the county there is a lot of fantastic players. Colin McCabe (Ballinagh), Paul Leddy (Lacken), James McGahern (Cornafean), Michael Devine (Templeport), James Veale (Cavan Gaels), John Fitzpatrick (Butlersbridge), Stuart Dunne (Belturbet), Conor O'Rourke (Laragh), Darragh Gannon (Kilygary). All great players.

I agree with a lot of the points made, but I do think the critical issue is proper coaching. Clubs should be helped out by county board coaches and even bring in outside coaches from counties like Tyrone. Get them into the schools as well. It really is so important. It is also important to have proper graded leagues and also to look after the talented lads with Development squads etc.
I had a bit of experience as I had a team from Dublin down at the Feile of '08 in Cavan. Small clubs particularly rural clubs just cannot hope to compete against the big clubs from Dublin, Cork and one or 2 other counties. The numbers just simply arent there. However I did think the standard of the Cavan clubs that year was particularly weak. It did grieve me as I am a proud son of Breffni.
But all is not doom and gloom it seems as the results of our minor and U21 teams this year can testify to. Keep putting the work in at under age level and some day it will bear fruit.

Very true. I heard Castlerahan were very unlucky too in losing there two games and could have easily been in that final, we should take pride in this too.

You've named out some fairly medeocre players there. none of those players you have named there are "great" as you say. Paul Leddy a great player? HA! Colin McCabe too. Youve got to be kidding. You never once refered to the really great players like David Brady , Cormac Boyle, (Castletara) or Daire McEnroe, Garrett O'Reilly, Jordan O'Reilly (Castlerahan) or even James Brady (Ramor)

Jamie Reilly ( Castlerahen ) , neal mcenroe ( Ramor ) , davin bent ( ramor ) , Keenan Donohoe ( cavan gaels ) The Future is Bright for cavan football

Yes all the players you picked are very good footballers, but its funny you didn't pick any Castlerahan players and they won Division 1?? I'd say David Brady (Ballyhaise) is probably the best footballer in u14 scoring 2-10 out of 2-11 in the Division 1 final this year.

roinn A i taut defenitly castlerahan or castletara. . in roinn B i was thinking the winners of Kingscourt or Killigary might win because both teams have decent players in the mix so it should be a good match . . . and the rest i wouldn be to sure. .
