Division2 ACFL

Cornafean 3-11 Swanlinbar 2-17

Cornafean started this game in very positive fashion and for the first 20 minutes there was only one team in it.  Barry Doyle with a point from play and a brace from frees gave the Reds the best possible start, with  a point from Gearoid McKiernan the response from the visitors.  C. Cullen's speculative shot from 20 yards on 10 minutes found the back of the net for Cornafean followed quickly by a J. McGahern point from play and when Aodhagan Smith blasted to the net following a great team move from the Reds on 15 minutes it was total domination from the home side.  G. MKiernan and R. Curran kicked points for Swad but by the 20th minute Cornafen were 6 points to the good and cruising.  But crucially for Swad, they hit a purple patch in the last 10 minutes of the half with a goal from C. McGovern corner forward and points from R. Curran, G. McKiernan and C. Walsh.  A. Smiht kicked Cornafean's last point of the first half to leave it 2-7 to 1-6 in favour of the Reds.  A. Smith was again on target for the Reds early in the second half but the visitors were beginning to find their mojo with R. Curran and G. McKiernan dominating the middle and were rewarded with a R. McBarron goal swiftly followed by the ever influential G. McKiernan brace of points to leave the game 2-8 each after 5 minutes of second half play.  In fairness to Cornafean they were not giving up and on the 10th minute a goal from James McGahern was a major boost when an initial shot came back of the crossbar he fired to the net.  D. Leydon and R. Curran again replied for the visitors but B. Doyle kept the Reds just in front on 17 minutes with a free.  That was as good as it got for the Reds with the visitors dominating the last 10 minutes of play scoring 7 pts to Cornafean's 3 with McKiernan giving an exhibition scoring 5 pts with scores also from R. Curran and C. McGovern.  B. Doyle had Cornafean's last 3 points of the game.  Cornafean will be disappointed with the defeat but there will be better days ahead  Short some players through injury and losing C. Cullen and C. Sheridan also to injury during the contest, they never gave up and many of the younger players who have come into the team this year are playing very well.  Cavan supporters will be delighted to know G. McKiernan is in good form as through out the second half on Saturday evening last he gave an exhibition of fielding and points taking  and he was undoubtedly the reason whey the men from Swad left Paric Naoimh Fionnan with two very valuableleague points.
