U10 & U11 boys

Cuchulainns U10 and U11 boys had a busy week of fixtures starting with the U10 tournament at Cross field day on the bank holiday Monday.  Eight clubs took part in the tournament which was played on the football field in Cross and thanks to the organisers it was in tip top condition.   The games were played in good conditions for the most part save for the final when the skies finally opened. Cuchulainns looked sharp in the group stage as they topped their group beating Maghera and Killinkere on the trot before losing narrowly to Bailieborough.   The semi final was another tussle with Kingscourt who the boys had beaten earlier in the summer in the final of the Killinkere Jamboree tournament.  However this time the tables were turned and Kingscourt emerged as victors by a narrow margin in a tough battle where the boys regrouped well in the second half and brought the fight to Kingscourt.  Overall the players showed great battling qualities on the day and were not far away from a place in the final.

The County board scheduled a number of U11 games for the month of August, these fixtures kicked off last Thursday evening when Denn came to Mullagh.  Both clubs have two teams at this grade so two separate games were played on the evening.  A new dimension for these fixtures is that goals are allowed so goalies were deployed for the first time in a game played by this group of Cuchulainns boys.  Our older team earned a draw after a tough battle with great score taking and some heroic defending on view.  On the other side of the park the Cuchulainns younger team were involved in what turned out to be a heart stopper of a goal-fest with end to end action where the referee ran out of paper and lost count of the score!  Well done to all the boys on a busy week, next up is an away fixture in Shercock on Thursday 16th.

U15 & U16 girls.

Our U15 girls started their Div 4 Championship at home to Belturbet on Tuesday evening. The girls were rusty and this showed as they got off to a slow start with Belturbet kicking 4 points before we got on the scoreboard . The girls kept working and a goal from Aisling Doughty reduced the margin to two points by half time with Belturbet leading 0-6 : 1-01.

In the second half the girls started strongly and started to put pressure on Belturbet and with a couple of points from play and a goal from Eimear Smyth give Cuchulainns a 2 point lead with 10 mins to go. However, we conceded a soft goal and point to hand Belturbet a two point lead with a couple of minutes remaining. Cuchulainns pulled a point back and pushed hard for an equaliser but time got the better of them too loose by the smallest of margins. Final score Cuchulainn's 2-04 : 1-08 Belturbet. Hard luck girls on to the next game.

The U15 girls had their second Div 4 Championship game away to Bridgewater who are an amalgamation of Munterconnaught & Mountnugent on Saturday morning. The girl got off to a good start kicking 4 unanswered points, however Bridgewater hit back with a goal. The first half was nip and tuck and two goals from Suin Smith give the girls a 1 point advantage at the break on a score line of 2-04 : 2-05.

The second half continued as the first with both teams working hard. A goal each from Suin Smith, Renee Ward and Siofra McGeoghan and 4 well taken points by Eimear Smyth saw the girls over the line an won on a final score of 4-06 : 5-10. Well done girls. A hard fought but well deserved win.

Next game is on Monday evening in Mullagh at 7pm against Lurgan B.

Carryduff GAC U16 Girls Tournament.

Our U16 girls were invited to take part in Carryduff's tournament on the Bank holiday weekend. There are a few of links between the clubs, Carryduff were the girls team that the Cuchulainn girls hosted for last year's Feile and Mullagh native Paddy Mullan has been part of the Carryduff club for the last 40 years. Paddy came on the day to support the Cuchulainn girls.

We found ourselves drawn in Group D along with Derrynoose of Armagh, Thomas Davis of Armagh and St. Brigid's of Antrim. All games were 9 aside, 10 mins per half with 3 mins halftime break.

First up was Derrynoose who were a very good footballing team and accurate in front of goals. They beat us well on a final score of 5-07 : 0-03. Derrynoose would go on the play in the cup final.

Next up was St. Brigid's. Our girls started the game well and kept control through out to win 7-13 : 4-07.

The last group game was against Thomas Davis which the girls won comfortable 4-11 : 0-01

With winning two games in the group this put the girls in the cup competition and found themselves drawn against the winners of Group B, Na Fianna of Dublin. Our girls were up for the game and took the game to Na Fianna. The first half was close with our girls missed a number of easy scores and went into the break with Na Fianna leading 1-01 : 0-02.  The second half was similar to the first and we pushed the Dublin club all the way but a goal from Na Fianna in the dying minutes saw them over the line with a final score of 3-06 : 2-04.

The girls did themselves and the club proud.

A big thank you to Carryduff for inviting us to their inaugural tournament and congratulation to them for running a well organised and fun event.

Lastly, another big thank you to the players for giving it everything on the day and to Tom Hannon,  Brenda Monaghan, Caitriona Smyth and Tricia Stafford for driving and supporting the team.

 U15 DIV 5 BOYS

Wednesday our U15 D5 boy's had a home game V Ballyhaise, we got off to a good start with a few quick scores but Ballyhaise came back at us and at half time we were just up by 2points. Second half Ballyhaise got a couple of quick goals but we fought our way back and with 2 mins to go we were up by 1 point it looked to be all over when Ballyhaise got a free  about 20 yards out  they went for a point to draw the game which would have been a fair result  but luckily for them and unlucky for us the ball dropped over everyone's heads under the bar and into the back of the net. A great performance by all  our next game is in 2 weeks away to Ballyhaise.

U12 GIRLS

Our u12 girls had their first game in the Cornafean tournament on Wednesday in Cross against St Finbarrs, both teams played very well and were evenly matched and our girls played good attacking football and got some fine scores, unfortunately just losing out by 2 'points in the end with Cuchulainns -13 St Finbarrs 15

Our next U12 girls game in the Cornafean tournament is Wednesday 15th against Muterconnaught/Mountnugent in CROSS pitch at 7.
