SFC: Killygarry upset Gaels in thrilling opener

August 10, 2018

High fives all round for Killygarry

Killygarry 3-11
Cavan Gaels 1-16

Dara Brady's injury-time goal saw Killygarry stun Cavan Gaels in this evening's senior football championship opener at Crowe Park, Lacken.

Beaten quarter-finalists last year, Declan Sheridan's side blew the Gaels away in the early stages of this cracking encounter with goals from Ryan Brady and Conor Smith inside the opening six minutes, which saw them surging 2-2 to 0-0 in front of the champions.

Daryl McKenna, Ross Sheridan and Smith helped to open up the lead to nine and that'd be the margin at the interval after a brace of Martin Reilly points (one free) cancelled out frees from Seanie Johnston, leaving it at 2-9 to 0-6 when the teams went in at the break.

Paul O'Connor's goal gave the Gaels the best possible restart and last year's beaten Ulster finalists caught fire from there to outscore the Crubany men by 0-8 to 0-3 and leave victory within their grasp.

Killygarry dug their absolute deepest in the dying stages though and cut through one more time for substitute Brady to crash home their third goal in the 61st minute much to the delight of their contingent in attendance.

Johnston sent over a free two minutes later but time ran out on the Gaels to snatch an equaliser as their neighbours inflicted them with a first defeat in this competition since 2016.

Meanwhile, there was also a big upset in Round 2 of the intermediate championship this evening as Bailieborough defeated Mullahoran by 3-7 to 1-12 in Drumalee.
