Well done

The refs payments I think can be seen in the end of year report at convention. Again, its a fraction of what some clubs are paying out in managers etc "expenses". I dont envy the refs or begrudge them their expenses as long as they do their job correctly and protect the players especially in underage games. A bad ref can turn young lads sour and drive parents irrate. At schools level we re v glad of refs who are able to help us play a v busy schedule of games across the year. Without them gaa would be dead at second level. On average each carlow school would play approx a min of 18 games across bpth codes. This doesnt include ladies. So without willing refs, some who work but are flexible in work/students/unemployed these couldnt proceed. Its 20 per team, 40 in total, and would take a minimum of 2hrs no matter how close the ref would be to the pitch.

No argument with you on the schools bit. Some great volunteer work going on there. Your point about managers tho is wide of the mark, I hate it but at least it's not coming from co. board funds whereas the refs money is. Is the amount spent on refs shown each year??? Maybe as you say it's not that much ( i'd say it's quite sizeable) but either way we ain't getting value for money with the refs we have bar the few exceptions you mentioned.

But how do we encourage lads to ref? Cant cut the expenses I think as we ll have no one take it up. Fact. People are involved enough, v majority anyhow, to give up more of their time and perhaps loose hrs in overtime etc to ref. It like a lot of things, we ll all complain but none of us will volunteer to do it. One reffing issue - I use this loosely, I think that disappointed me the most this yr to date was the haphazard way that linesmen seem to be appointed or not appointed. One of our games in the senior saw a 15 yr old boy being used as lineman whilst also doing tje scoreboard. Now this is just wrong on so many levels.

He didnt hit 11 wides for us! No complaints with me. We got a good advantage for martys goal. We sometimes have to look for other reasons other than the ref.

Like to add congrats to Paud on the appointment, well deserved. V good hurling ref, keeps himself v fit and has a great way with players on the field.
Would also like to add Jonathan Murphy to the list, good ref and doing v well in the ladies game. Credit where it is due, never mind the begrudgers.

Congratulations to Paud O'Dwyer on getting the minor hurling All Ireland final. Hope things go well for him and all his umpires.

Plenty of good referees in Carlow and the competition is high and to get the All Ireland is a great honour. An honour for our county as well. I am sure that Paud and Patrick Murphy and David Hughes have often been told by spectators and others - 'what would you know about hurling and you from Carlow'

Congrats to Paudie and best wishes to all involved in the All-Ireland minor final. This is my first post on this matter about referees and I find it distasteful to have people on about referees expenses. People do not take into account the fact that all referees loose valuable time out from their families especially if they have children. Also they are not able to support their own teams when they are playing because they are off refereeing somewhere else. In my opinion there is no such thing as a bad or indeed good referee.A referee is only as good as there last match whether juvenile or adult. No referee goes out to make a mess of a game because it reflects badly on himself/herself. So please lay off referees and start respecting them if not we will loose referees and perhaps the next time there is a practice game in your club step in and referee it and see how you get on.

Hynes0, I think you ll find the majority of people on our page here agree with you on the issue of refs and their expenses. I do however think that there are good and bad refs in a general sense. Everyone has good/bad days but some are consistently good or bad! Its like a lot of things when money is involved - people expect a certain standard. Players now are putting in such huge efforts at club/county that they expect refs to be of that same standard, especially st club level where players dont receive expenses and months of hard slog can be undone by poor decisions or refs who are not upto that level. I m v grateful for the effort the refs make and I hope they keep up the standards thats expected of them. Like I said, I think we re lucky we ve a lot of good refs in the county.

It says a lot about the current state of Carlow GAA when the most popular thread on this thing all summer is about some refs from Carlow getting a few fairly big games. Next time you meet someone from Leix tell them: "We have great refs in Carlow."

We got a team to an all ireland club final and their easnt many more posts. Stop being so negative. I couldnt give a toss about leix! What positive things are you doing for gaa in the county??

Now hynes I'm sorry if you find this distasteful but it's a fact. It's 50 euro to ref a game in this county and some refs. are doing three or four per week. That's not bad pickings esp. considering the standard of those refs.

Congratulations to David Hughes and John Hickey for refereeing the Leinster club hurling and football finals over the past 2 weeks.

I think its a great honour and shows the regard that both are held in by the powers that be.
Both did excellent jobs, so well done again.
