The Late James Jackman Widespread shock was felt in Tullow following the untimely passing of one of the town's most noted sportsmen, who hails from a family synonymous with Tullow, writes Suzanne Pender. James Jackman (50) a native of Barrack Street, Tullow sadly passed away following complications the arose during his triple heart bypass operation at Harefield Hospital in London. Married to Catherine (nee Codd) the couple emigrated to Harroe in London ten years ago with their four children- Keith (now 26), Gillian (23), Niall (12) and Niamh (11). Following just two months of concern over his health James underwent the relatively routine surgery, but within hours his family was informed that complications had arose. James family from Tullow arrived to be at his side - his mother, Peggy, brothers John and Ciaran and sisters Angela O'Sullivan and Bernie O'Brien. Sadly James never regained consciousness and passed away May 7, causing deep shock among all who knew him. Despite his years away, James never lost touch with Tullow, a place where he was affectionately known as Stoney and fondly remembered for his sporting prowess. A noted GAA and rugby player with Tullow, James's achievements on the field in both codes were recognised throughout the region and led to some memorable accolades. A tough and formidable opponent Stoney's love of sport never faltered even after the end of his own playing days. Indeed it was a great source of pride to him that son, Keith played GAA among the Irish clubs in London. A devoted racing fan, James was in jubilant form two years running at Cheltenham when he basked in the glory of Hardy Eustance's successes along with the Byrne family. A butcher by trade, James ran his own butcher shop in Tullow and when he moved to London it wasn't long before once again he opened his own successful butchers shop in Shepherd's Bush. James's remains returned to Tullow where they will repose at Byrne's Funeral Home Barrack Street. Requiem Mass was in Church of the Most Holy Rosary, Tullow with burial afterwards at St Patrick's Cemetery. James is survived by his wife, Catherine, sons Keith and Niall, daughters Gillian and Niamh, mother Peggy, brothers John and Ciaran (Tullow), Angela (Tullow) and Bernie (Carlow), extended relatives and a wide circle of friends both in Ireland and London.
