Murtagh, John

August 20, 2013
The death has occurred of John Murtagh, Kilkenny Road and late of Gurteen, Railyard at Castlecomer District Hospital. A versatile sportsman, he played football with Railyard and also inter-county for close to a decade with Kilkenny. He also excelled in soccer circles with both Deen Rovers and Comer Rovers. He started his working days in Rossmore before moving to Irish Clay Industries. He enjoyed socialising, making his point on and off the field of play and the craic and banter associated with the local hostelries.
Having contributed so much to the GAA locally, it was a deserving tribute to see both past and present members of Railyard GFC form a guard of honour at the removal. He was laid to rest in Moneenroe Cemetery after Requiem Mass was celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception by Mgr Michael Ryan, PP, Castlecomer, assisted by Fr Martin Tobin, PP, Clogh, Fr Joe Campion, CC, Castlecomer and Fr Liam Shore, PE, Castlecomer. He is survived by his daughter Brenda, son Neil, wife Marie, son-in-law Brendan and daughter-in-law Susan, his grandchildren Luca, Leo, Eve, Robin and Noah, his sisters Jane, Breda (Australia), Anne, Alice (Tolerton), Mary, Kathleen (England), brothers Patrick and Willie, nephew Thomas, other relatives and numerous friends.
