Tragic death in Bagenalstown: The late Michael Kelly

Hundreds gathered in St Andrew's Church, Bagenalstown last week to pay their respects to a man described as "one of life's true gentlemen". Michael Kelly (41) of Green Road, Bagenalstown died under tragic circumstances at his home last Tuesday, a great shock to his heartbroken family and his many friends across the county. Married to Rita, the couple had two sons, Michael (14) and Jordan (11), whom Michael was extremely devoted to, taking an active role in all aspects of their lives. "His boys were everything to him - whatever they were involved in, he was there," Michael's brother David told 'The Nationalist'.

"He had a genuine interest and time for everything they did," he added. "A lot of people over the last few days have said to me that Michael was a real gentleman and really that best describes him. He was very strong mentally and physically, very loyal, opinionated and he was always looking out for people," said David, who also spoke eloquently about his brother at his requiem Mass last Friday morning. The eldest son of Michael and Kay (nee Clarke), Green Road, Bagenalstown, Michael worked for many years in Pratt's Auto Image, Carlow and more recently in Carlow Warehouse, Bagenalstown. One of Michael's greatest loves was car racing and it was with real thrill that he had raced on the track at Mondello. Among the car racing fraternity in county Carlow, Michael was very well known and respected. A former player of both St. Andrews GAA club and Erin's Own hurling club in his native Bagenalstown, Michael continued his involvement in the GAA after his playing days. He was keen to support his sons, who play for the Michael Davitt's club in Old Leighlin, and held the position of club secretary. At his removal Mass last Thursday evening and Friday morning, all three clubs formed guards of honour, while at Sunday's senior hurling county final, which featured Erin's Own, a moment's silence was observed in Michael's memory. The Kelly family has been overwhelmed by the wonderful support of the people of Bagenalstown at this time. Burial took place to Newtown Cemetery last Friday morning, where Michael was laid to rest with his beloved grandparents and uncles. Michael is survived by his heartbroken family, his sons Michael and Jordan, parents Michael and Kay, brothers Davis and Aidan, relatives and many friends.
