Salter, Jim
March 20, 2012
The death occurred on Thursday 8 March of Jim Salter, 5 Green Hills, Carlow and formerly of Rathcrogue and St Jospeh's Terrace Tinryland. Jim, who was 73, had been unwell for some time but bore his illness with great courage. He was cared for with loving kindness by his wife Margaret and the nursing staff of the Sacred Home, Carlow.
Jim worked in the sugar factory for more than 40 years and was known as an very loyal and honest employee. His contribution to voluntary organisations was legendary.
In the 60's he was Tinryland GFC's secretary. For more than 30 years he served as both chairman and president of Tinryland Athletic Club, and he helped out for many years in the running of the annual Rockford road race. Jim was an excellent chairman during his long term of office, conducting the monthly committee meetings in his own unique, efficient style. He was the voice of the club at sports meetings, and road races and his clear voice made him an automatic selection as the person who manned the public address system at county championships. He was also a life-long member of the Fine Gael party, which provided a guard of honour at the removal of his remains. He was active in the Green Hills residents' association and helped out in later years with the meals on wheels organisation.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Margaret, brother Frank and his relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Oliver. Jim's remains were removed from Healy's Funeral Home on Friday to Askea Church. He was interred in St Mary's Cemetery on Saturday 10 March.
