A long serving Carlow GAA steward is alleged to be seeking legal advice after a player who was banned from Netwatch Cullen Park for three months had the suspension lifted.

Carlow steward Johnny Doyle is furious with the county board over their failure to inform him that the ban on the Eire Og player had been lifted.

The player in question was suspended after Doyle alleged that he verbally abused him when he asked the player for his student ID when he was entering Netwatch Cullen Park to watch a game.

The player did write a letter of apology to Doyle and the county board, but the latter still handed out the ban resulting in the player being suspended from all playing activities.

The player in return sent a solicitors’ letter to the county board and subsequently the ban was lifted.

Doyle is furious by this turn of events and he has resigned from all his stewarding duties, stressing that had he been informed the ban had been lifted, he would have accepted it and moved on.

Speaking to the Carlow Nationalist, Doyle said: “In the bigger picture I would have stood up and said to him (the player) for the sake of Carlow GAA and the county I would have stepped aside and let him carry on regardless.

“He got his bit of punishment and knows he has to behave himself. At this moment I haven’t received an apology from the county board. I want a written apology.”
