Carlow's Jack Kavanagh has stressed the importance of staying in Division 1 of the Allianz Hurling League after yesterday's dramatic relegation playoff over Offaly.

Trailing by 11 points and a man down, the Barrowsiders staged a remarkable second half comeback to win by a point and retain their top-flight status for 2020.

The victory came a week after Colm Bonnar's men had missed out on a league quarter-final spot after losing to the same opponents at Netwatch Cullen Park.

"We were devastated last Sunday that we couldn't get over the line and be in a league quarter-final against Limerick," the midfielder told RTE's Morning Ireland.

"But we just had to turn things around this week. We knew we weren't that bad, mistakes cost us but we got back to training on Tuesday night and we had it out. We knew we had one massive performance in us to stay in this division.

"It means everything. There's a lot of pride in Carlow hurling, in this panel and in the Carlow hurling world. It's massive for us and we're really looking forward to Kilkenny coming to Carlow and going to Salthill.

"It makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, you can't wait to get going."
