Dublin down DCU as three see red
January 10, 2007
Three players were sent off as Dublin overcame DCU in a fiery O'Byrne Cup clash in Ringsend.
Dublin 3-14
Dublin City University 0-12
Rising stars Dermot Connolly and David O'Callaghan bagged 1-5 and 1-4 respectively as Paul Caffrey's charges romped to a convincing win in their opening foray of the season.
But in an otherwise sporting encounter, the Dubs had Ross McConnell dismissed while the students saw Conor Mortimer (Mayo) and Kevin Leahy (Dublin) red-carded also.
A goal from the aforementioned O'Callaghan after less than a minute got Dublin off to a flyer but only a brilliant save shortly afterwards by Stephen Cluxton prevented Bernard Brogan from goaling as DCU fought back.
However DCU received a blow just before the break when Mortimer got his marching orders for a second yellow card offence.
Things got worse for the students - 0-7 to 1-7 behind at the interval - when they had Leahy sent off after a scuffle with McConnell.
Dublin dominated the second half and goals from Connolly and Declan O'Mahony catapulted them into a match-winning 11 points lead.
