Cork have appointed Ronan McCarthy as their new senior football manager on a three-year term.

The Douglas clubman takes over the managerial reins from Peader Healy, having served as a selector under the previous two managers Conor Counihan and Brian Cuthbert between 2013 and 2015.

A former minor and senior footballer with the Rebel County, McCarthy steered Douglas to a county final appearance back in 2008 before managing Carbery Rangers to its first ever senior football championship title eight years later.

McCarthy's own playing career saw him winning two Munster championships with the Leesiders, along with a National League crown, and he would go on to represent his county in the 1999 All-Ireland final defeat to Meath at Croke Park, where he lined at right corner-back. He was also a member of the Cork panel which captured the All-Ireland minor title in 1991.

The Glanmire Community College principal is expected to announce his backroom team in the coming days, with Cork GAA chairman Gerard Lane describing him as "an ideal choice" to be the county's next senior football boss.

"The experience Ronan has at club and county level made him an ideal choice for this demanding role," Lane is quoted saying on the Cork county board website.

"He has been immersed in club and county football since his playing days ended and is well qualified to take this position. On behalf of everyone associated with Cork GAA, I would like to wish Ronan every success in his new role, and we all look forward to a successful period ahead."
