Despite strong speculation that former Wexford manager Jason Ryan was about to take over the Wicklow footballers, reports now suggest that this is not the case.

On Tuesday, news broke that Ryan was about to be appointed Wicklow manager in place of Johnny Magee, however, the Wicklow People states that those rumours are unfounded and that former Roscommon manager John Evans is the front runner for the position.

The provincial paper reports that the Wicklow GAA management committee were briefed on Monday night by the selection committee who told them they had found the man they want to appoint.

It has also been reported that the identity of the preferred candidate will not be made known to the county board until an hour before the meeting next Monday night.

Whether it be Evans or Ryan that is appointed and ratified by delegates, they should be in place for the Wicklow senior football championship quarterfinals.
