Fitzgerald revelling in selector's role

Maurice Fitzgerald.

One of the best things about becoming a Kerry selector for Maurice Fitzgerald is it has allowed him to rekindle old friendships.

Twenty years on from his memorable All-Ireland final performance against Mayo, Maurice is back involved with the Kingdom after filling the void left in Eamonn Fitzmaurice's management set-up by Diarmuid Murphy's departure at the end of last season.

"I played with Eamonn so I would have known him very very well. And I played against him and found out a lot more about him," the legendary forward is quoted as saying in the Irish Daily Mirror.

"He would have been a very nice fellow to play with and he would have been quite the opposite to play against.

"He's been a fantastic competitor. We go back a long way because we played together with Kerry so when Eamonn rang me, probably the familiarity and the friendship that was there would have allowed me to jump into the chair and fall in with them. Because there was a relationship and friendship that was there.

"I think that's one of the surprises about getting back involved. Renewing all of those friendships and having time to be with people like, for instance, Liam Hassett, who I played with, and Mikey Sheehy, who obviously I revered growing up, and always was the case.

"I used to meet him on and off but to actually be in their company again has been kind of very exciting and something I hadn't considered. If you're asking me about getting back involved, that was one of the big bonuses for me, because we're all footballing people, and it's great to sit down with people like that you enjoy."
