Warwickshire GAA will be relocated to a new site after an agreement was made with Highways England who are building a relief road through one of the pitches at Pairc na hEireann.

There were concerns that the building of a relief road off junction six of the M42 through the famed old grounds could spell the end for the club that caters for over 3,000 members.

However, the company developing the new road have offered to build a new state of the art clubhouse and pitches at a new site, which the club will choose.

Warwickshire have six pitches at the grounds to cater for all their teams and two of these will be kept for use during the construction phase of both the motorway and the new facility.

County chairman Mark McLoughlin admitted that it was a huge relief to have secured their future as he expected a fight to keep their grounds.

"We were expecting a battle, but Highways England have been incredibly progressive in securing the facilities that we have and have clearly done their homework on just how important the GAA is to the Irish in Britain," said McLoughlin.

He added: "Pairc na hEireann is incredibly important both to the local community here and the GAA community nationally, we're just delighted that Highways England are working with us to secure its future."
