MFC quarter-final: Pierson's goal sends Breffni County on the road to Croker

August 05, 2017

Cavan's Philip Rogers beats Galway's Jack Glynn to the ball during the All Ireland MFC quarter final at Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.

Cavan are through to the semi-final stages of this year's All-Ireland MFC following a fully merited quarter-final victory over Galway at Pairc Sean MacDiarmada today.

Manager John Brady masterminded a 1-11 to 0-11 victory for the Breffni County over the Connacht champions.

The winners timed their run to perfection as Oisin Pierson's 55th minute goal ultimately separated the sides at the final whistle.

That score parachuted the team in blue and white into a 1-9 to 0-11 lead and centre-forward Cian Madden tagged on two further points to add gloss to their victory.

The Tribesmen shaded the opening period on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-5 after full-forward Padraic Costello brought the first-half scoring to a close via a free kick.

Stephen Joyce's side then enjoyed a bright opening to the second half when hitting three points without reply from Darragh Silke (2) and Evan Murphy but they had no answer to Cavan's late flourish.

The Breffni boys will now try to throw a spanner in the works of Kerry's quest for a fourth consecutive All-Ireland MFC title when they travel to Croke Park on Sunday, August 20th.
