The gigantic Dublin flag that's become an integral part of big match days at Croke Park has fluttered for the last time.

The iconic flag - property of All Dublin GAA Fans - has traditionally been passed around The Hill by home supporters at GAA HQ before games but will no longer be allowed into the stadium for Health & Safety reasons, having been declared as a potential fire risk by Dublin Fire Brigade and thereby outlawed by the GAA.

Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke confirmed that he was in contact with the Association over the banning of the flag but said they have stuck by their original decision to ban it. He posted the following response on his Facebook page:

"Unfortunately, I don't have good news for you on the flag front but at least I have some clarification for you as to why large flags are not permitted in the stadium.

"Dublin Fire Brigade advised that large flags should not be allowed into the stadium as they are flammable items which pose a fire risk and as the health and safety of all match goers is our number one priority during any event, large flags are not permitted in the stadium.

"I also understand the stadium has received a number of complaints when these large flags have been used by supporters who do not like when flags go over their heads during matches restricting their view etc. and their feedback also has to be taken into consideration by the stadium."

The flag will now be sold, with proceeds going towards cancer research.
