Pat Spillane has hit out at the player heave against Peter McGrath in Fermanagh.
The highly-respected Rostrevor man confirmed last night that senior players had forced him to step down as manager on Friday, just a week after he had been reappointed for a fifth year.
"I think his record as a manager with Down and his record as a manager with Fermanagh, getting to an All-Ireland quarter-final (in 20015), getting to Division 2 in the league, staying in Division 2 with limited resources and a small population," Spillane said on The Sunday Game last night.
"At the end of the day, no manager scores a winning point in an All-Ireland.
"It's an easy cop out to get rid of the manager, if you want to look for fall guys, players should look themselves in the mirror and ask themselves have they delivered. I don't think they have but Pete certainly has delivered for Fermanagh and owes nothing to them. A great footballing man and a great coach."
