Limerick manager John Kiely has moved to clear up confusion over joint-captain Diarmuid Byrnes playing for his club just hours before their All-Ireland SHC qualifier defeat to Kilkenny.

Byrnes played two games for Patrickswell in the Tom Semple Senior Hurling Festival in Thurles just hours before the clash against the Cats.

The Limerick joint-captain had returned from a knee injury sustained in late April, but suffered a setback at county training.

He was deemed unfit to be part of the match day squad against Kilkenny, but as part of his rehabilitation, Byrnes lined out with his club in the tournament.

The 2015 All-Ireland under-21 winning captain did tog out for the SHC qualifier, but was listed as number 27 and wasn't part of the panel.

Kiely told the Limerick Leader: " Playing for his club was part of his return to play protocol with a view to hopefully having him back for next weekend."
