Fitzgerald's Kingdom appointment rubber-stamped

Maurice Fitzgerald.

Maurice Fitzgerald was last night ratified as a Kerry senior football selector.

A two-times All-Ireland SFC winner with the Kingdom in  1997 and 2000, Fitzgerald - who guided St Mary's to All-Ireland Club IFC glory last February - replaces Diarmuid Murphy and joins Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Padraig Corcoran, Mikey Sheehy and Liam Hassett in the Kerry think-tank for the coming year.

Manager Fitzmaurice anticipates that the Cahirciveen man's "football knowledge, work ethic and personality will be a huge asset to us."

Outgoing chairperson Patrick O'Sullivan welcomed the new appointment at last night's county convention meeting: "You always hope your best players will get back involved and Maurice has stepped up to the plate and I wish him all the best going forward. Maurice is one of the few people who have never retired from Kerry. He is coming back in a new role, is a born winner and if he brings that leadership into the dressing room, Kerry will prosper in the years ahead."
