Cathal McCarron's decision to bear his soul in his autobiography has been praised by Tyrone captain Sean Cavanagh.

McCarron's book 'Out of Control' details his battle with a gambling addition and the dark roads that led him down.

It has been shortlisted for the eir Sport Sports Book of The Year award and, in an interview with The Irish News, Cavanagh revealed his admiration for his team-mate's honesty in writing the no holds barred autobiography.

"He was bearing his soul to the world and it is something that normally doesn't happen," Cavanagh commented.

"Most sportspeople have that wee bit of an element of protecting themselves and not telling too much of a story and what Cathal has done is the complete opposite of that. You have to admire that because all of us have our skeletons and none of us will tell many of them.

"Cathal will openly admit that he has a tough life, he has had a tough time at home, tough time on the football field and with the gambling. He deserves credit to come out and be honest with everything that has gone wrong in his life and he is trying to put it right now.

"He is a fantastic footballer and a good lad and I do remember the night he refers to in the book, myself and Colm were early up to Kelly's Inn for a meeting and I was happy enough to embrace him because I have been around the corner enough times to see what happens and you have to give lads a second chance.

"I was glad to see him back."
