Kilmessan to stage first All-Ireland Club Poc Fada competition

October 26, 2016

Former King of the Cooley Mountains Brendan Cummins will take his hurl to the Hill of Tara this Saturday

Kilmessan Hurling and Camogie Clubs will host the inaugural All-Ireland Club Poc Fada competition this Saturday, October 29.

This promises to be a wonderful occasion as clubs from all over the country will compete against each other to be crowned All-Ireland Club Champions.

Teams of two will represent their club, taking alternative pocs across the Meath countryside.

The Poc Fada course begins on the wonderful setting of the Hill of Tara, runs through the local countryside and finishes back at Kilmessan hurling pitch.

The club with the lowest number of pocs will be crowned All-Ireland Club Poc Fada Champions. There are excellent sets of club prizes for the winners and the runners-up.

Kilmessan have been very lucky in securing the involvement of the first three home in the 2016 National Poc Fada, held in July on the Cooley Mountains.

This year's winner, James Mc Inerney, Co Clare, will represent his club Newmarket-on-Fergus alongside fellow Clare hurler, Colin Ryan.

Brian Connaughton of Westmeath, who finished second in the Cooley Mountains will be part of the Raharney team taking part as well as Brendan Cummins of Tipperary fame.

The former Tipperary goalkeeper, All-Ireland winner, All-star and Poc Fada specialist will be part of the Ballybacon-Grange team that will compete on the day.

Kilmessan has a long history with Poc Fada with their own Dinny Donnelly winning a national title in 1963. The club has been hosting the Meath Poc Fada since the turn of the millennium.

There are limited time slots still available on both days so if you want to register your club for the competition on the Saturday or register for the individual competitions on the Sunday please contact Kilmessan Hurling and Camogie Club at [email protected]
