Mickey Harte is confident that former Footballer of the Year Sean Cavanagh will commit to the Tyrone cause for 2017.
Ever since the Red Hands made their exit at the hands of Mayo in this year's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final there has been speculation that the Moy clubman, who was shown a controversial black card in that defeat, will call it quits but, speaking to TG4's GAA BEO today in advance of the Tyrone SFC final, Harte had this to say on the matter...
"I don't think it's the last time he has played for Tyrone, I hope it's not the last time that he has played for Tyrone.
"It would be an awful way for a man of his stature and the career he has had for Tyrone to finish on that note. I just think it would not be right.
"Anything I can do to keep him and persuade him to stay there and to continue to be the big player that he is for Tyrone then that's what we'll be doing."
He added: "I've no doubt that you will see Sean Cavanagh playing for Tyrone next year."
Harte's future as manager was also thrown into doubt after the Tyrone County Board refused his request to extend his current agreement until the end of the 2018 championship campaign.
"There wasn't any reasons for it (the refusal) given to me. I just asked for it, actually there was two years supposed to be in the offing, for to give that degree of continuity.
"With this team developing the way it is, I thought it would be a good thing to do to take away all that doubt about who's going to be there, for how long whatever.
"It is disappointing that it didn't happen but it is what it is. The fact of the matter is that I'm still the manager next year so there's work to be done for that."
