Sligo GAA has defended its policy on appointing referees to SHC games in the county.

It comes after Western Gaels player Michael Connolly took charge of last weekend's final round group game between Coolera-Strandhill and Tourlestrane, the result of which had a direct bearing on his club's championship progress.

Coolera-Strandhill's 1-15 to 0-16 victory meant that Western Gaels qualified for the semi-finals.

Speaking to the Sligo Weekender, Sligo GAA referee administrator Pat McGrath defended the appointment, pointing out that such scenarios aren't unsual owing to a shortage of hurling referees in the Yeats County.
