The launch took place yesterday of a novel fundraiser on behalf of the Gaelic Masters Association and Aware.
Hosted on the sports crowdfundingwebsite www.pledgesports.org they are aiming to raise funds for their upcoming Masters International Rules games against the Australian Masters in Ireland this October, and 20% of the funds raised will go to national charity Aware, a charity and cause close to the hearts of the association's members.
Taking their exploits to a new level, Ireland's Over-40 Gaelic footballers will take on their Australian counterparts in two Masters International Rules Test Matches to be played in Galway and Cavan. As an independent organisation with no outside support it's a big undertaking to host a touring party but in a few short years the Gaelic Masters Association has achieved a lot and they are a positive and determined bunch.
The organisers have pledged a minimum of 20% of the funds raised online through Pledgesports to Aware, the national organisation supporting individuals and families through depression and bipolar disorder. Aware offers Support Groups nationwide, a Support Line and Support Mail service, and a range of education programmes for teenagers aged 15-18; Life Skills programmes for adults, and Wellness@Work education and training options. Aware relies on events like this as well as corporate and public donations for 85% of their annual funding. Further information on Aware's services is available on www.aware.ie
Speaking ahead of the launch, Gaelic Masters PRO Sean McCaughey says: "We are delighted to be supporting Aware with this campaign. It is a great link for us because men of our age group are particularly at risk for mental health issues and we have long promoted not just the physical but the mental health benefits of healthy active ageing. In fact Mayo Masters were rewarded for their efforts in this regard with a national Pride of Place Award in 2015.
"Despite being a little over the hill we are always looking to try something new and the crowdfunding option fits that bill nicely; we have had too many years of standing in the rain holding buckets! As well as the incentive of supporting Aware, the crowdfunding platform gives us the opportunity to reward donors.
Depending on the contribution made, rewards for individuals include admission to games, tour programme, and Irish team polo shirt. There are also packages for business sponsors."
As a result of his illustrious senior inter county career with Sligo during which he won a Connaught title an All Star and represented Ireland in Senior International Rules Eamonn is one of Ireland's most high profile Gaelic personalities. Latterly his insightful and knowledgeable TV analysis has further enhanced his footballing credentials.
In his first year of Masters football Eamonn said: "I have been really impressed with the Gaelic Masters. They are in great shape for their age and some of them can still play a bit! Joking aside what they do and their overall positive attitude is inspiring."
