Former Sligo player Noel McGuire will be part of Niall Carew's backroom team for 2017.

A legend in his own right within the county, McGuire lined out for his native county for over 13 years and he captained the side to that historic Connacht title in 2007.

The Easkey clubman comes in as a selector in place of former Kildare footballer Ronan Sweeney who stood down from the position citing work commitments as the reason for his decision.

Sligo manager Niall Carew is delighted to have McGuire on board and admitted that he was an obvious choice when writing in his weekly column for the Sligo Champion.

"So why Noel McGuire?," writes Carew. "Well that's easy to answer, for he has a proven track record with his club Easkey. He was player-manager when they went on to win the intermediate championship of 2015. His playing career is exemplary.

"Noel has also served time with development squads from U14 right up to minor level. This shows me that he has a hunger and a desire for Sligo to succeed."
