Another players' revolt brewing in Mayo?

Last year Mayo's county footballers ousted joint-managers Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly. Now there are mutterings that Mayo's club players could revolt in the wake of the county board's decision to postpone most of last weekend's third round SFC and IFC games at the eleventh hour.

Much to the annoyance and frustration of club players, the games were called off to aid the county team's preparation for the All-Ireland final against Dublin on September 18. Speaking to the Western People, Kiltaine's Ultan Corrigan hit out at the disregard shown to his peers, describing them as "third world citizens", and also refused to rule out the possbility of a players' boycott.

"If it was the first time, I'd let it slide, but it's happened too often now in the past five years," he said.

"It's really getting under the skin of players, so much so that many of them are threatening to boycott a match at this stage - which we definitely do not want to see.

"Every team is in the same boat. Training for 11 months is too much for an amateur sport. We play for the love of the parish and the game of Gaelic football, but that love is diminishing by the year."

The disgruntled club player continued: "We get a fixture list at the beginning of the year - we're as well to chuck it into the fire. If this was a once off, fair enough, but this has continously happened over the past number of years where club players have to put their lives on hold due to the county's success."
