It was a disappointing weekend for Tyrone's Sean Cavanagh but July was a happier time for the Moy man who played a captain's role in bringing the Anglo-Celt Cup to the Red Hand County for the first time in six years.

And it was for his huge influence on the destination of the 2016 Ulster SFC title that Cavanagh has been chosen as the winner of the Quinn Building Products Ulster GAA Writers' Merit Award for July.

To win the award, Cavanagh had to fight off the claims of team-mate Peter Harte and Monaghan ladies' team manager Paula Cunningham, while Patrick McBrearty (Donegal), Ryan McHugh (Donegal) and Niamh O'Neill (Tyrone) also came under the Writers' consideration.

Cavanagh last won the UGAAWA Monthly Award back in September 2008. He also won the UGAAWA Footballer of the Year Award that year and in 2013.

Cavanagh was presented with the award by Seamus McMahon, Quinn Building Products Sales & Marketing Director Ireland at a reception in Quinn's Corner, Dungannon.

As well as the coveted Belleek vase, Cavanagh received specially designed silver cuff links from Carlingford Design House, training gear from O'Neill's International Sports and a medical kit bag from 3FiveTwo on behalf of Kingsbridge Private Hospital in Belfast.
