Cork's hurlers turned their season around with a stunning 1-26 to 1-23 victory over Dublin at Pairc Ui Rinn.
The visitors received a massive blow in the 29th minute when Chris Crummey was sent off for a second yellow-card offence, with just a point between them at the time, 1-7 to 0-9 in favour of the Leesiders.
The superb Alan Cadogan (1-5) flashed the sliothar to the net five minutes earlier, gathering a Luke O'Farrell delivery and finishing with aplomb moments after a Johnny McCaffrey point had edged the Dubs into a 0-7 to 0-6 lead.
The last eight points of the half were shared as the winners led by 1-10 to 0-11 at the short whistle.
Niall McMorrow and Patrick Horgan twice traded points upon the resumption and both goalkeepers made saves before a brace of David Treacy points from placed balls brought Ger Cunningham's charges back within two.
Incredibly, the 14 men moved ahead when Eamonn Dillon found the net 16 minutes after the restart, 1-16 to 1-15, but three unanswered Cork points from substitute Daniel Kearney, Horgan and Cadogan had the hosts back in front by two at the three-quarters stage, 1-18 to 1-16.
Chris Bennett and Treacy (free) pointed either side of Cork finishes from Horgan and Conor Lehane but further Rebels scores from sub Brian Lawton and Kearney meant the gap was four with an hour played.
The 14 men refused to give up and were level again by the 65th minute thanks to Treacy's eighth point (free), but Kieran Kingston's side landed four of the last five points via Bill Cooper, Lehane, Cadogan and Horgan to progress to the second round.
