Former GAA president Nickey Brennan cannot see Kilkenny's football fortunes improving any time soon.

Brennan, a former Kilkenny senior hurling and football manager, rules out the prospect of the Cats returning to the Allianz Football League in a wide-ranging interview with the Irish Daily Star today. His comments come after the county minor footballers' humiliating Leinster championship defeat to Wexford in April prompted hurling legend DJ Carey to get involved with the U14 football squad.

"Kilkenny are cut adrift at football at all levels. There is no inter-county football team at the moment operating at their level," Brennan said.

"They could reasonably compete in Division 4 with a lot of work. It's not going to go beyond that.

"I am sorry at the situation. I grew up managing and playing at football and have a genuine gra for it. I don't see it improving. It is what it is.

"To be fair, there is no point going out and fielding teams for the sake of fielding teams. We are not ready to enter the inter-county scene. I don't see that happening.

"There is no point kidding ourselves."
