"I was made out to be the baddie"

June 23, 2016

Meath's Michael Burke speaks to referee Padraig Hughes as Dublin's Eoghan O'Gara walks away during the 2014 Leinster SFC final at Croke Park.

Mickey Burke didn't appreciate the fall-out after Meath's defeat to Dublin in 2014.

There was a storm after the game when Royal County manager Mick O'Dowd informed the media that his player had been bitten and stills from the game showed the Meath defender in an ugly tangle with Dublin attacker Eoghan O'Gara.

A quiet man by nature, Burke was suddenly headline news...

"I was made out to be the baddie, a bit," the Longwood clubman told The Irish Examiner. "I don't want to say too much on it, to be honest. It is what it is and everyone knows what happened, it's done now.

"We'd a game to prepare for against Armagh and I have to say Micko was very good to me, he stood by me. It kind of got you down. It was the first time something like this had happened to me.

"I got red cards and stuff like that before but it was on every radio station, it was in every paper and Micko was ringing me, 'just keep calm, keep the head'. He was very, very supportive of me and I appreciated that. But look, we've moved on."
