Seven points from Ronan Kennedy helped Leitrim to only their second ever All-Ireland SFC Qualifier victory at Waterford's expense at a rain-lashed Carrick-on-Shannon.

The hosts laid the foundations for their win in the first half when they built up a 0-7 to 0-2 lead after playing with the elements to their backs. They extended their advantage to eight points in the second half before Waterford grabbed the last four points to halve the deficit. 

Emlyn Mulligan and Kennedy fired Leitrim into an early 0-2 to 0-0 before Gavin Crotty got the Deise off the mark in the eighth minute. After Ciaran Gilheaney and Patrick Hurney traded points, Shane Ward's charges took control with four unanswered points from Kennedy and Mulligan to lead by five at the break.

Kennedy increased Leitrim's lead with two more points within three minutes of the restart before sub Shaun Corcoran replied for Waterford, who then lost free-taker Joey Veale to a black card.

Mulligan, Kennedy and Donal Wyrnn continued to keep the home side in the driving seat with points before a late rally by the visitors - led by sub Mark Ferncombe - put a better complexion on the scoreboard.
