McArdle: Down can curtail McManus

Down's full back Brendan McArdle and keeper Michael Cunningham with Cork's Colm O'Neill.

Returning Down defender Benny McArdle says he's confident they can nullify the threat of Conor McManus in Sunday's Ulster SFC quarter-final against Monaghan.

McManus displayed some sensational form throughout the league scoring 2-43, including a 0-12 haul against All-Ireland champions Dublin, but McArdle, who has been sidelined with injury all season, feels the Mourne men are more than capable of dealing with Monaghan's free-scoring captain.

"Everybody has taken on board Conor's performances but I believe that we have men who are more than capable of doing a job on him," McArdle told the Belfast Telegraph.

"He played against us four years ago and we were able to contain him. I don't buy into this one-man team theory. Monaghan have a number of quality players - people like the Hughes brothers and others who are every experienced and well versed in Championship football.

"We feel we know Monaghan pretty well. Everyone knows their style of play and what they can do and we feel we have done enough in training to be able to counteract what they are going to throw at us on the day."

Throw-in for Sunday's game at St Tiernach's Park is at 2pm.
